If you’re headed to the movies this weekend, check out “The Bling Ring” — not just for the buzz, but for Mississippi’s own Israel Broussard, who stars as Marc in his first major film role.

Directed by Sofia Coppola and inspired by a “Vanity Fair” article, “The Bling Ring” tells the true story of a group of L.A. teens who stole millions in designer goods from celebrities like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. Broussard plays a shy, insecure teen lured into the group’s glamorized crimes.

Raised in the rural town of Saucier, Broussard said his childhood was simple — bike rides, lakes, and a tight-knit family. His sister led him into acting through local theater, which eventually landed him in front of casting agents. Coppola chose him for the part after a candid audition about his life. “I think she saw something in me that fit Marc’s insecurity,” he said.

At just 18, Broussard was still getting his footing in Hollywood — so much so, he admitted he didn’t initially know who Coppola was or the scope of her family’s film legacy. He also wasn’t exactly fluent in designer fashion, so he prepped for the role by bingeing “Pretty Wild” and “Fashion Police.”

Castmate Katie Chang called him “the sweetest and most respectful guy ever,” praising his natural talent. Broussard filmed scenes in Paris Hilton’s real home — ironically, one of the very houses the real “Bling Ring” burglarized.

Despite Hollywood success, Broussard stays grounded. “Acting’s not necessarily my passion,” he said. “But I’m glad I’m doing it — and I’m learning a lot.”

Though he’s not sure where his future leads — maybe music, maybe directing — he knows better than to get ahead of himself. “If I’m the next big thing, that’s awesome,” he said. “But I can’t count on that.”

He does miss Mississippi, where his large family still lives. “It’s not like Hollywood,” he laughed. “So if you see the movie, just keep an open mind.”
