Designer Looks Without the Sole-Crushing Price

I don’t usually spend money on extravagant purchases. People who drop thousands of dollars on a purse have always puzzled me. A Hermès Birkin bag, for example, can cost as much as a car — or even a house. Even with unlimited funds, I can’t imagine making that kind of purchase.

Still, I understand the appeal of investing in something well-made. If I truly love an item and believe it will last, I don’t mind saving for it. At the same time, I’m just as intrigued by finding quality at a surprisingly low price.

That’s what led me to Avia, a line of clothing and shoes sold at Walmart. In recent years, Walmart has quietly stepped up its fashion game, offering pieces that feel both current and accessible. Its spring dresses are worth a look, but it’s the sneakers that really stand out.

Avia’s latest styles strike a balance between design, comfort and durability. They come in a range of colors, but the blue and silver pair first caught my eye. They were sleek, stylish — and, frankly, better-looking than many sneakers I’ve seen priced in the hundreds. I wasn’t alone in noticing. A quick scroll through TikTok shows others buzzing about them, too.

Naturally, I went back for another pair — this time in teal. There’s also a red-and-blue option that feels tailor-made for fans of the University of Mississippi, and I’ve spotted a coworker wearing a chic neutral beige pair.

Avia itself isn’t new. The brand was founded in 1979 and built its reputation in the 1980s and ’90s with performance athletic shoes, particularly for running and basketball. Today, under Walmart’s umbrella, it has been reimagined for a broader audience, blending affordability with on-trend design.

More recently, Avia has introduced styles that resemble the popular look of On running shoes — often called OnCloud — but at a fraction of the cost. While those typically retail for $140 to $180, Avia’s versions come in around $27. That’s a price point that invites curiosity, if not outright experimentation.

The line extends beyond sneakers. Avia also offers workout wear that echoes higher-end brands, from athletic shorts reminiscent of Lululemon to romper-style pieces — perfect for running errands before a daily walk. I’ve got my eye on a pink version that will likely sell out soon.

So if you’re looking for a comfortable pair of sneakers for spring walks or an easy, stylish option for travel, Avia might be worth a try. Sometimes, the best finds aren’t the most expensive — they’re the ones that quietly deliver more than you expect.
