A trip to the thrift store can often become a meeting with fate.
Sometimes, when you go thrifting, you have something in mind to purchase, but you aren’t really sure if you’ll find what you’re looking for. When you do, it seems like destiny intervened.
That’s how I felt recently when I went thrifting in Tupelo. After checking out the Spirit Halloween store, I went in search of some other Halloween items, as well as some boots I was planning on painting.
I walked down a couple of shoe aisles, and what did I spot on one of the top shelves?
A pair of bat boots.
Well, let me be a little more specific. These are YRU Bat Reflective Boots, featuring bat-shaped cutouts with reflective detailing that shimmers purple and green.
According to Hot Topic’s description, the black boots have pointed toes, front laces and 2¼-inch heels, with polyurethane uppers and rubber soles. They have a little bit of a witchy look, which makes them right at home in a Halloween wardrobe.

I think I paid under $10 for the pair, which I’ve seen priced at $120 on the Hot Topic website. They have become my Halloween fashion staple this season. I wear them with all of my Halloween outfits.
The boots are also pretty comfortable, even though they look like they might not be. Turn them in the light, and the bats magically change colors.
A quick web search even had me looking at YRU’s bat-themed handbags. I wouldn’t mind having one to complement my boots.
That’s the fun of thrifting. You go in looking for something you might be able to turn into what you want, and sometimes you find something that doesn’t need changing at all.
I went looking for boots to paint and came home with a pair I wouldn’t change a thing about.
Maybe there’s a little wisdom in that: It’s good to know what you’re looking for, but sometimes you find great things you never imagined.
