Unicycling banana spotted in Mississippi suburb: A delightfully unexpected sight

The unicycle-riding banana

LaReeca Rucker

I generally write about popular culture, so this is a little off-topic. But as I was driving home from the bookstore today, I saw something yellow coming down the sidewalk near my apartment complex.

As I got closer, I realized that among the walkers and bikers out enjoying a beautiful, sunny Mississippi day was — believe it or not — a banana on a unicycle. Yes, a banana. On a unicycle.

Now, I get that it’s not completely unusual to see someone riding a unicycle down a sidewalk (or “multi-purpose trail,” as it’s officially called), and of course, it’s perfectly normal to spot a banana at your local supermarket. But a banana on a unicycle? That’s a once-in-a-lifetime sight — like Halley’s Comet. Seventy-five years might go by, and I’ll probably never see another unicycle-riding banana.

What makes it even more surreal is that this wasn’t New York City or Los Angeles, where you might expect to run into something so quirky. This happened in a relatively conservative Mississippi suburb, where bananas on unicycles are few and far between.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this little moment because it truly brightened my day. And honestly, I hope more people follow the banana’s lead. Wouldn’t it be great to randomly see a costumed bear playing basketball? Or an apple picking up trash along the highway?

I bet that was something. I remember when I first moved to ‘the big city’ from Hattiesburg, it was exciting to see a cop riding down the street on a horse.
