There’s something magical about a good roadside find — especially when you aren’t really looking for anything at all. A while back, I was driving through Coffeeville, Mississippi, on my way back from a trip to Jackson. It was one of those sunny, unhurried afternoons where you’re just enjoying the drive, windows down, music on, and the possibility of stumbling onto something interesting hanging in the air.
I’ve stopped there a few times in the past and, on more than one occasion, scored some gorgeous vintage jewelry — necklaces and earrings that feel like they have stories of their own. Think rhinestones, costume gems, and clip-ons that would make any retro-lover’s heart skip a beat.
This particular trip? Jackpot.
I pulled in and was instantly drawn to a setup hosted by a man named John Tice. Displayed near the entrance were several one-of-a-kind, antique vanity pieces that John had reimagined with artistic flair. He had combined mismatched pieces of antique furniture, added vintage mirrors, and painted the entire setup in bold, bright colors that gave each vanity its own personality. These weren’t just furniture pieces — they were whimsical works of art, ready to live a second life in someone’s home.
Imagine a pale pink vanity with mismatched knobs, ornate curves, and a mirror that looks like it came from a 1930s Hollywood dressing room — except with a splash of color and charm that makes it feel fresh and modern. Each piece felt like it had a story to tell, and I loved that John had given them a new one.
Of course, I couldn’t leave without taking a few pictures. I’ve included a slideshow of John’s creations in this post, and if you’re a lover of upcycled furniture, flea markets, or DIY magic, you’ll definitely want to take a peek.
There’s just something deeply satisfying about discovering beauty in unexpected places. Whether it’s a sparkling pair of forgotten earrings or a hand-painted vanity with character, I’m always grateful for those spontaneous stops that end up being the highlight of the day.
So, if you’re ever driving through a small town, and you see folks set up on the side of the road with tables and tarps, do yourself a favor: pull over. You might just find your next favorite thing — and meet some creative souls like John along the way.
