There’s something deeply comforting about dining in a place that feels like it belongs to another time — where the walls tell stories and the food tastes like it came straight out of Grandma’s kitchen. I’ve always been drawn to restaurants with a little character, charm, and history, and two of my favorites are Taylor Grocery and Gibbes Old Country Store in Learned, Mississippi.
If you’ve never been to Gibbes, it’s the kind of place that reminds you why people fall in love with the South. Think old hardwood floors, mismatched tables and chairs, antique signs on the walls, and the kind of genuine Southern hospitality that makes you feel like family the moment you walk in.

Here’s my advice if you plan to visit: Don’t eat all day. You’ll want to arrive hungry — really hungry. Because when they bring your food out, it’s not just a meal — it’s a Southern feast. You’ll be served a plate loaded with comforting classics, from fried chicken and catfish to fluffy mashed potatoes, fresh vegetables, and cornbread so good you might dream about it later. And please, do yourself a favor: save room for dessert.
Beyond the generous helpings and mouthwatering food, what I loved most about Gibbes was its ambiance. The entire place feels like a step back in time, a preserved slice of rural Mississippi filled with warmth, history, and soul. It’s the kind of restaurant that makes you want to linger after your meal, sip sweet tea, and strike up a conversation with the people at the next table.
You can find reviews of Gibbes Old Country Store on TripAdvisor, and I’d recommend checking them out if you want to see why people drive from all over just to eat here.
If you’re a fan of hidden gems, historic buildings, or just really good food served with heart, Gibbes is worth the road trip. And if you’ve got other small-town restaurants like this you love, I’d love to hear about them! Email me at the link above.
