I love the thrill of a good antique or thrift store treasure hunt. You never know what quirky, charming, or unexpected items you might stumble across — and on one of my recent excursions, I discovered a curious little ceramic bird that looked like it flew straight out of someone’s 1970s den.
With its bold orange glaze and retro vibes, it definitely had personality, but it didn’t quite match my decor. Still, something about its shape and whimsical charm caught my eye. I couldn’t resist. For just a few dollars, I decided to take it home and give it a second life.

Once I got it back, I pulled out some of my craft supplies and gave this funky bird a makeover. A few coats of fresh paint later, and it had a totally different look — cleaner, sleeker, and much more my style. Suddenly, the little ceramic piece that once screamed “groovy grandma” now fits right in on a modern shelf or mantel.
The finished bird reminded me so much of the chic owl figurines I saw on Anthropologie’s website — same kind of sculptural charm, but for a fraction of the price. (Let’s be honest: Anthropologie owls probably start at $50, right?)
This little project reminded me that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get fun home decor. Sometimes all it takes is a little creativity, a fresh coat of paint, and the courage to look past the color orange.
Have you ever given a thrifted find a makeover? I’d love to hear your transformation stories — or see your before-and-after pics. Email me at the link above.
