The Testament of Ann Lee: Haunting Portrait of Shaker Devotion

I went into this film expecting a biographical thriller — something that would frame Ann Lee as an experimental woman ahead of her time who embraced ideas we might now recognize as modern feminism and was persecuted by society for those beliefs. Instead, the film is about a pious, devout woman … who was still persecuted by society for expressing her spirituality in a different way.

Analyzing the lyrics of nation’s current Top 10 songs

Maybe it’s the lit major in me — or just years of overanalyzing everything from Shakespeare to Springsteen — but I can’t help myself. Every now and then, I take a peek at the Billboard Hot 100 to see what the kids are singing (or screaming) along to these days. Are the lyrics secretly profound? Or are they just catchy chaos wrapped in glitter and Auto-Tune?

Charlie Mars

Charlie Mars Comes Home with ‘Blackberry Light’

In his latest album “Blackberry Light,” Mississippi native Charlie Mars captures the feeling of being torn between adventure and home. In the title track, he sings about wanting to move on one minute — and move back the next.

For Mars, “home” is Oxford, where he’s lived (aside from a few years in NYC) since 2000. “I’ve got my go-to coffee shop, the Square, and it just feels like where I belong,” he said while on tour. “Oxford’s been a kind of sanctuary — a good place to land after being on the road.”

A story about a restaurant called Babalu that features images of their food.

Babalu Tacos & Tapas brings retro vibes and Latin flavor to Jackson’s Fondren district

If you’re an “I Love Lucy” fan, the word “Babalu” might ring a bell. It was Ricky Ricardo’s signature song — an Afro-Caribbean tune that now lends its name to one of Fondren’s hottest new restaurants.

Babalu Tacos & Tapas, located inside the old Duling School at 622 Duling Ave., opened with a retro-urban vibe that fits right in with Fondren’s artsy energy. Walk inside and you’ll see vintage Lucy clips projected on the wall, a nostalgic touch dreamed up by co-owner Al Roberts after seeing something similar in another restaurant.

Movies starring Brittany Murphy.

Remembering Brittany Murphy: Underrated performances and the tragic loss of a rising star

Brittany Murphy was one of those rare talents in Hollywood — versatile, magnetic, and utterly unforgettable. From her quirky comedic timing in “Clueless” to her raw emotional range in darker dramas, she had a screen presence that drew you in, no matter the genre.

And beyond acting, she had another gift: a beautiful singing voice that audiences only got a small taste of, most notably through her voiceover work and musical performances in “Happy Feet.” I always believed Murphy had a long, diverse career ahead of her — possibly even a future on Broadway where she could blend her acting and vocal talents.

Lifecasts of blues musicians created by a Delta artist.

Blind artist preserves Mississippi blues legends through powerful face casts

When Sharon McConnell-Dickerson began to lose her vision in 1995, she faced a difficult truth: her life would never be the same. But in the darkness, she discovered something unexpected — art.

That discovery eventually led her from New England to the Mississippi Delta, where she would spend more than a decade capturing the soul of the blues, not through sound, but through sculpture.

Translating the nation’s top songs

Every week, the Billboard Hot 100 delivers the songs that dominate our airwaves and streaming playlists — but what exactly are they saying?

Rather than passing moral judgment, I like to take a playful, sarcastic look at the lyrics, breaking down the top five singles to see what’s really going on beneath the catchy hooks. Here’s my tongue-in-cheek translation of this week’s chart-toppers.

Translating the nations top songs

It’s that time again—time to decode the top five singles on the Billboard Hot 100. This isn’t about passing moral judgment on the lyrics; rather, it’s a chance to cleverly unpack them with a mix of sarcasm and literary critique.

Translating the nation’s top singles

It’s time, once again, to translate the top five singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Again, I don’t really intend to make a moral judgment about the lyrics, even though some I’ve analyzed undoubtedly warrant parental advisory stickers. My interest stems more from a desire to productively channel sarcasm and literary criticism.

The film poster or "Marie Antoinette."

‘Marie Antoinette’ Review: Sofia Coppola’s stylish biopic lacks substance and struggle

Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette” dazzles visually but falls flat emotionally, revealing the limitations of a film that leans too heavily on aesthetics without delivering the depth of its subject. The cinematography is breathtaking, the costumes extravagant, and the French landscapes mesmerizing — but the film feels more like a designer photo shoot than a compelling historical drama.

Starring Kirsten Dunst as the ill-fated young queen, the film attempts to modernize Marie’s teenage angst by layering a rebellious rock soundtrack over 18th-century decadence. The concept — bold and trendy on paper — ultimately feels gimmicky. Rather than enhancing the storytelling, it distances the audience and feels more like a marketing strategy aimed at Gen Z than an artistic choice.

Translating Billboard’s top five songs

As I did before, I’ve taken a closer look at the lyrics of today’s top five singles. My goal isn’t just entertainment—it’s to see whether any of these chart-toppers truly live up to the label of “artist,” a word that’s often used far too loosely. Despite the flood of four-letter words and the lack of lyrical depth, I’m curious to see if any genuine poetry or originality shines through.
